Somatic Therapy in NYC
Memory doesn’t live in the brain, it also lives in the body. Somatic therapy focuses working with the body for healing that talk alone hasn't reached.
Through gentle awareness of sensation, movement, breath, meditation, and nervous system responses, this work helps you develop a clearer and more responsive relationship with your internal experience.
Mind-Body Somatic Therapy
Trauma doesn't only live in memory. It lives as wordless memories in the body. A tight chest that shows up around certain people. A flinch before you consciously register a threat. A body that stays braced long after the danger has passed. Talking through what happened doesn't always reach what the body is still holding.
Somatic therapy works with that directly by tracking sensation, tension, and nervous system responses as they show up in real time, not just discussing them after the fact. Grounded in the same trauma-informed, attachment-focused lens that runs through this practice, this work pays attention to how safety, or the lack of it, gets held physically in the shoulders, the breath, the space between you and another person.
This isn't a replacement for the rest of the work; it's another way into it, for the parts of trauma that words alone haven't been able to fully reach.
Types of Somatic Therapy I Specialize In:
-
Blending different parts of you as thoughts with body awareness, this helps you locate where different "parts" of you, like your fixer, actually lives in the body. Instead of only talking about a protective pattern, you learn to notice it directly: where it tenses, braces, or pulls away, and what it's protecting you from feeling. This allows for release, and makes more space for the natural calm, connected energy already inside you.
-
Guided step by step approach, with many interventions specific for facilitating and enhancing mind-body-sensory processing. ART consistently focuses on the traumatic images from the presenting problem.
During ART’s Voluntary Image Replacement, clients are instructed by the ART Therapist on how to eliminate distressing images and replace them by positive images of the client’s choice.
-
Gentle energy work that supports the nervous system's own capacity to settle and restore.
-
Movement-based practice that helps reconnect breath, body, and awareness, especially useful for clients who feel stuck in their heads.
-
A tool for building the kind of internal steadiness that makes deeper healing and building of new neural pathways more accessible.
-
A subtle, hands-on approach that works with the body's own rhythms to support release of old belief systems and nervous system patterns and regulation that words have a hard time reaching.
